What is YouTube Picture in Picture?

In short, Picture-in-picture (PiP) on YouTube shrinks a video into a small player window. In this case, you can keep watching the video while using other apps on your mobile device. To use the YouTube Picture-in-Picture feature, you need to change the settings on your device first. Below are the steps to allow the Picture-in-Picture feature on your phone.

For Android:

  1. 1. Go to your Android settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Special app access > Picture-in-picture.
  2. 2. Tap on YouTube > Allow picture-in-picture.
  3. 3. Go to your YouTube app settings > General > Toggle Picture-in-Picture on.

For iPhone & iPad:

  1. 1. Go to your iOS device settings > General > Picture-in-picture.
  2. 2. Tap Start PiP Automatically.
  3. 3. Go to your YouTube app settings  > General > Toggle Picture-in-Picture on.

Now, you can watch a YouTube video and exit it without closing the playing window.
